The Advantages of Audio Books to Our Children

Children's audiobooks on compact disc have been something I'd always thought with doubt. After all, it isn't more on reading or perhaps is it? Being a mother and English teacher, not to mention an avid fan of reading, I was truly conscious of the importance of reading and had often tried my best to instil in my little ones and students a love of reading however, I still thought of if I was not maybe missing something and chose to investigate the situation further.

I was pleasantly impressed to find out that the specialists agree—audio books in fact help to improve a child's reading! Just by listening to audiobooks, little ones are presented with possibility to hear words and thus giving them with models for the proper use of grammar and as well giving them the opportunity to see the correct pronunciation of fresh or difficult words.

Another benefit of audio books is that they may play an important part in connecting the gap in youngsters whose understanding and comprehension is usually greater than their reading skill. Often children who can't yet read or who are simply learning to read become disappointed by their lack of reading ability. In allowing them to "read" along with an audio book this frustration can be prevented as being the child feels as though these are really reading. This is an enormous advantage when reassuring a life-long love of books and reading in the really young.

A more noticeable, however, no less vital benefit of paying attention to stories is that it boosts a child's listening abilities. Over fifty percent of our learning or accumulation of knowledge is reached through just tuning in. Really! Up until now I had not really thought about it like that. Through just listening to audio books on compact disc or cassette children's focus is improved and they also turn into better listeners and thereby better learners. Spend some time and think it over. Just lately there were no televisions and radios were the centre of home entertainment. Growing up in South Africa (TV only turned available there in the early 70's) I still remember looking forward to Sunday evenings at home listening to stories on the radio. Hearing stories is still a great way to spend quality time together as a family and it has been shown to boost a child's conversation abilities and to encourage them to express themselves.

The story tellers of audio books also often deliver the tales to life through different voices, music and sound effects. Kids are encouraged to use their imaginations and make their pictures of characters and places. The overall results of this is one of entertainment and delight thereby strengthening the web link between books and happiness. This is really very important to parents struggling with shy or problem readers.
